T.F.C! T.F.C! T.F.C!
If you’ve been to a game, then I bet you just said that out loud – specifically, coming from the Southend Supporters Section. If you haven’t been - you need to go at least once in your life!
This year, the Toronto Football Club welcomes a whole new gang of players including Spanish midfielder Ager Aketxe, Brazilian youth international Auro Alvaro da Cruz Junior and Dutch superstar defender Gregory Van Der Weil. They will be playing along side hometown heroes like Ashtone Morgan who has been with the club since 2011. Morgan is also a member of the Canadian National Men’s team and he shows no signs of slowing down.
As we head into yet another season on Saturday, I’d like to reminisce about the past year.
After winning the Supporters Shield back in October (the first time in TFC history), TFC made their way to the MLS Cup Finals against the Seattle Sounders – a repeat of the finals in 2016 where Toronto fell shy of the first place prize. Not this time though - the Reds outscored Seattle 2-0 at BMO field in the Finals becoming the very first Canadian team in MLS history to win the title. I would have to say it was the biggest milestone thus far for the club. To top it off, Coach Greg Vanney won the MLS Coach of the year. Vanney has been the head coach for the Reds since 2014.
Fast forward to February 20th when Toronto entered a two-game series and beat Colorado Rapids 2-0 in the first leg allowing them to advance to the quarterfinals after a 0-0 draw.
The Toronto FC plays the ‘Tigres UNAL’ of Mexico next Tuesday at home followed by their trip to Mexico for the 2nd leg looking to secure a spot in the Semi-Finals. Coach Greg Vanney says that ”the Tigres are one of the best, arguably the best in the region”. After the draw against Colorado, he will definitely put his and the team’s best foot forward in their match up against the Tigres.
Be sure to check out the boys in red at their season home opener this Saturday, March 3rd at 1:00pm at BMO field.
