Toronto Raptors vs Washington Wizards

Lately, I’ve really been hooked on this TV show called Scandal. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of it, but its about this woman named Olive Hope who is a fixer in Washington and has a team of “gladiators” who will rest at nothing to help their clients. She’s in love with this man named Cpt. Ballard and is also having an affair with the President of the United States which is a problem for… wait. I’m getting carried away. Speaking of Washington though - the Toronto Raptors were there last night at Capital One Arena vs the Wizards.

The starting lineup in Friday night’s game consisted of the regulars, but with one exception. As OG Anunoby rolled his ankle Wednesday night vs the Orlando Magic, Norman Powell step up step up into the shooting guard position. This will be OG Anuonoby’s first game missed this season. Another player who wasn’t participating was John Wall for the Wizards’ - the fourth time vs the Raptors. Washington is 15-10 without him.

The Wizards got off to a good start in the first, being up 6-0.  Coach Casey pulled Valancuincas early to give him a mental break as he wasn’t playing the defense that we are all used to seeing - putting up two fouls early in the 1st. Jakob Poeltl checks in as the only Raptor to play in all games this season. Poeltl is averaging 7pts & 4.7reb per game.  Raptors call a time out at 7:20 in the 1st , down 18-4 hoping to stop the Wizards momentum.

With sinking 0/7 three-pt in the 1st quarter, the Raptors switched it up. Once again, no starters are on the court to open the 2nd and lately I can’t even differentiate who the “first unit” and “second unit” are.  The second unit managed to tie up the game at 32-32 looking for their first lead of the game accomplishing that a few seconds later. They take their first lead of the game 35-32 with 7:20 to play in the 2nd.

Raps lead at the half, 51-47.

JV is back and looking mean. He’s going hard in the second half making some tough shots contributing 12pts to the Raptors final box score. Someone who really shined in the 3rd and had a fantastic game was Otto Porter Jr who ended with a game high 24pts, 6reb, 2ast and 1stl. Porter contributed to a 7-0 run for Washington as they came within 2pts of the Raptors. They may have even extended the lead if C.J Miles hadn’t put up three 3-pointers in a row, ending the 3rd quarter ahead by 3pts, 77-74.

Delon Wright recieved a technical foul for his reaction from what he thought was a clean swat in the 4th quarter - upping the physicality of the game and the emotions as well. If it weren’t for Demar DeRozan stepping up in the final two minutes of the game, it may not have ended with the Raptors getting another W improving their record to 44-17. DeRozan finished with 23pts, 4reb, 4ast.

Sunday night is going to be a busy night. We have the Bucks playing the Sixers, we have the Oscars and we have the Raptors playing the Charlotte Hornets at home. Raptors are looking to avoid getting stung by Kemba Walker and the swarm as they play at 6:00pm at the Air Canada Centre.
