They won! TFC won! It was a hard fought battle here in Toronto on Wednesday night. After a tough home opener loss on Saturday night against The Colombus Crew, the TFC mananged to get their groove back and win against the Tirges UANL in the CONCACAF Champions League. All though it wasnt an easy win it was a well desereved one.
All-star forward Jozy Alitdore scored in the 60th minute to tie the game at one, just eight minutes after Eduardo Vargas, of the Tigres put one goalkeeper Alex Bono. And just as we thought it would end in a 1-1 draw, in the 89’ minute Jonathan Osario showed off a fancy back heel move to secure the victory, 2-1 for TFC.
Osario said” we know we can score goals-we have the advantage heading down to Mexico, being up a game...being the man of the match is great for my confidence'.
TFC midfielder Victor Vasquez, who is injured with nerve related back spasams says that they are confident heading to Mexico and they are a team that can play in any condition (referring to the climate difference).
The Tigres are considered to be one of the best teams in Mexico. Osario also stated that 'they are one of the best in the contintent'. Being runners-up in 2016 & 2017, the Tigres are hungry and will continue to play hard especiallay at home. So even though winning the first game is a great feat for the reigning MLS Cup Champs, this second game will not be any easier.
**Fun Fact: Mexico has won the title for the past 12 years and Canada winning 0. Could this be the first time Canada wins the CONCACAF Champions League title? I mean- why not? They wont the MLS Cup for the first time back in November 2017.
The Tigres of Mexico now have home field advantage Tuesday as they host Toronto FC @ 10:00pm est for the second leg of the quarter-finals. All Toronto needs is a tie to move on to the semi-finals. We will find out who they play and when once all quarter-final games are complete, by Wednesday March 14th.
