Who can stop Manchester City?

Another new season is almost here and for one day, every team feels like they have a chance of winning it all and will hope to be the new Leicester.

Manchester City come into this season as the clear favourites and it will take something special to knock them off their perch. With a team largely intact from last season, they are primed to make another run at the title.

The main challengers to City retaining the title will likely come from Anfield, as Liverpool have made some excellent signings during the summer and could go the distance. Ultimately, I think they will come up just short.

What of the other challengers?

Jose Mourinho is clearly not happy at Manchester United, as they don’t exactly have a squad that on paper looks like a team that can challenge for second, let alone with the title.

Chelsea have a new manager in charge and I see them struggling to score goals. It is always difficult when a new manager takes over and tries to put his identity on the team.

Arsenal are another team who have a new man in charge and it has been a long time since we have said that after the reign of Wenger. A slow start for Arsenal could lead to ‘Emery Out’ signs around the stadium very quickly.

Tottenham must now have loftier goals than just finishing higher than their north London rivals. They need to have consistent Champions League football every season in their new stadium and a lot will rest on the shoulders of Harry Kane. Kane won the golden boot at the World Cup but in general he didn’t have a great tournament compared to some of his teammates.

Here are my predictions for the opening weekend of the season:

Manchester United vs Leicester City 2-0

Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur 2-1

Bournemouth vs Cardiff City 1-1

Fulham vs Crystal Palace 1-1

Huddersfield Town vs Chelsea 0-1

Watford vs Brighton & Hove Albion 0-0

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Everton 0-1

Liverpool vs West Ham United 4-0

Southampton vs Burnley 1-1

Arsenal vs Manchester City 1-3

Enjoy what is sure to be another fantastic season and don’t forget to check out ‘EPL: Back of the Net’ every week with myself and Jon Nelson right here on BarnBurner.
