UFC 230 Main-Event and Jon Jones Return Announced
Friday, October 12, 2018
Its been a wild week for the UFC. The promotion is still dealing with the fallout from the post-fight brawl that took place following UFC 229’s main-event, when UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped over the cage and attacked Dillon Danis, who had been in Conor McGregor’s corner. Khabib’s decision to jump out the octagon had a domino effect because members of his team would then jump in to the octagon and attack McGregor.
UFC President Dana White wasn’t going to let the post-fight brawl dominate the news feed as they would make major announcements regarding the main-event of UFC 230 as well as when former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones will be returning to action.
UFC 230 Main-Event: Daniel “DC” Cormier (21-1-1 NC) (c) vs “The Black Beast” Derrick Lewis (21-5) for UFC Heavyweight Championship
After Derrick Lewis’ impressive knockout victory over Alexander Volkov this past Saturday, Joe Rogan mentioned that the win put Lewis as potentially next in line for a title shot. Since its already been confirmed that Daniel Cormier would be fighting Brock Lesnar in early 2019, it didn’t seem likely that Lewis would be getting an immediate title shot however once Dustin Poirier was forced to withdraw from his co-main event bout with Nate Diaz, the UFC were in a bind and needed a big name to compete on the card.
The UFC then officially announced that Daniel Cormier will be defending his heavyweight championship against Derrick Lewis on what looks to be a stacked card featuring many exciting fight including: Luke Rockhold vs Chris Weidman II, Ronaldo Souza vs David Branch, and Derek Brunson vs Israel Adesanya.
This will be a huge risk for Cormier because if he loses, he may lose the opportunity to fight Brock Lesnar and miss out on a big payday before retiring from the sport.
Jon “Bones” Jones (22-1- 1NC) vs Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson II for UFC Light-Heavyweight Championship announced for UFC 232
Yes, you read that correctly. Jon Jones will be fighting Alexander Gustafsson for the UFC light-heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 232 on December 29th. Like UFC 223 this past April, the champion Daniel Cormier will officially be stripped of the title as soon as the first punch is thrown in this fight.
This will be the second time Jones and Gustafsson will be fighting one another; the first time being at UFC 165, which saw Jones defeat Gustafsson by unanimous decision in a close back-and-forth fight. The fight also received Fight of the Night honors, so it’ll be interesting to see how this fight plays out after five years.
Gustafsson will be coming into this fight with a two-fight win streak, with his most recent fight being a fifth-round knockout win over former number-one contender Glover Teixeira.
Jones will be fighting for the first time since he was suspended for testing positive for a banned substance following his third-round knockout win over Daniel Cormier; later overturned to a no-contest when Jones tested positive.
This will be an event MMA fans will definitely want to tune into. In addition to the main event between Jones and Gustafsson, the fight card features the Women’s featherweight championship bout between champion Cris Cyborg and Women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, Michael Chiesa vs Carlos Condit at welterweight, Ilir Latifi vs Corey Anderson in light-heavyweight action, and a lightweight bout between UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn and Ryan Hall.
