Roman Reigns Reveals Leukemia Diagnosis
Wednesday, October 24, 2018
WWE fans heard shocking news during the opening segment of Raw this past Monday night. Each week the show usually begins with fallout from the previous episode along with a preview of what to expect over the next 3-hours however, storylines and sports-entertainment were put aside this week and a real moment provided fans a glimpse into the personal struggles of the company’s biggest star.
WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns walked down to the ring and revealed that he had been living with leukemia for 11-years and that it has returned. As a result, he announced that he would be relinquishing the Universal championship in order to take time off to battle leukemia. Roman Reigns, real name Joe Anoaʻi, mentioned that he was diagnosed with leukemia at age 22 and at the time, football was done with him, but the team that gave him an opportunity was the WWE.
WWE posted a video to their YouTube page showing what took place once Roman returned backstage following his promo. All his colleagues were there to show their support in what was truly an emotional scene.
In 2010, Reigns signed a developmental deal with WWE and performed under the name Leakee, and quickly made a name for himself in Florida Championship Wrestling, which was WWE’s developmental territory at the time. After a short stint on WWE’s newly revamped developmental program NXT, Reigns would make his main roster debut along with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins as The Shield.
Since then, Reigns has established himself as the face of WWE; he’s main evented four-straight WrestleMania events in a row (31 vs Brock Lesnar, 32 vs Triple H, 33 vs The Undertaker, and 34 vs Brock Lesnar), 2015 Royal Rumble winner, Intercontinental champion, Tag-Team champion, United States champion, 3-time WWE World Heavyweight champion, and WWE Universal champion.
Hopefully Roman can beat leukemia once again and return to the ring when he feels it’s okay to do so.
