Montreal, QC— Montreal Impact striker Ignacio Piatti was the hero for the Impact when he scored two second-half goals to keep Montreal’s playoff hopes alive.

Piatti’s first goal came from a penalty-kick after VAR determined that he was taken down in the box by Toronto substitute Eriq Zavaleta. He would then add another goal late in the game after some miscommunication between Alex Bono and Chris Mavinga.

Toronto FC had an opportunity to play spoiler because had they won this game, their rivals would’ve been officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Coach Vanney went back to a 4-4-2 diamond formation with Ashtone Morgan, Chris Mavinga, Gregory van der Wiel, and Auro Jr. in the back four. This was a different lineup from Wednesday’s game that saw him go with a 3-5-2 formation.

Montreal’s Ignacio Piatti had a scoring chance in the 14th minute when he maneuvered himself around Toronto captain Michael Bradley and struck a nicely placed shot on goal but was stopped by TFC goalkeeper Alex Bono, keeping the game tied 0-0.

Sebastian Giovinco had an opportunity on a breakaway shortly after however, he rushed a shot that ended up going straight towards Impact goalkeeper Evan Bush, which was an opportunity he’d likely want a do-over on.

Fortunately for Toronto, Chris Mavinga’s own goal was disallowed because Montreal’s Quincy Amaikwa was in an offside position when he went for a rebound, which kept the game tied after the first 45-minutes.

Montreal were dangerous on the counter-attack, which had been on full display throughout the game. The Impact were able to trouble Toronto’s defenders and forced Bono to make many spectacular saves.

Alex Bono came up big for Toronto many times throughout the game and had it not been for some of his highlight reel saves, TFC may’ve lost by a larger margin.

Montreal eventually found their way through Toronto’s defense and capitalized on their mistakes to win the game.

Toronto FC will play their final game of the 2018 MLS season next Sunday, when they host Atlanta United at BMO Field.
