Wrestling Legend Tom 'Dynamite Kid' Billington Passes Away
Wednesday, December 5, 2018
Wrestling fans woke up to sad news Wednesday morning as it was reported that pro wrestling legend Tom ‘Dynamite Kid’ Billington passed away at age 60.
Dynamite Kid made a name for himself as part of the legendary tag-team The British Bulldogs alongside ‘The British Bulldog’ Davey Boy Smith. The team got their start in Canadian promotion Stampede Wrestling, which was owned by Stu Hart, father of Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart. During their run as a team, The British Bulldogs achieved a great deal of success; they won the Stampede International Tag Team Championship twice and won the WWE Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania II, where they defeated The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine). In 2003, Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) ranked The British Bulldogs #5 on top-100 list of tag-teams of the PWI Years.
Dynamite Kid had a lasting impact on the industry, with many adopting a similar moveset of technical wrestling and high flying maneuvers like the diving headbutt.
Below are some of the reactions to Dynamite Kid's passing from those in the pro wrestling industry.
Will Ospreay (NJPW):
I heard news that Tommy Billington also know as the Dynamite Kid has passed away.
Thank you for all the work you’ve done for our country and inspiring so many wrestlers to take a chance on themselves.
RIP Dynamite Kid.
Jimmy Korderas (Former WWE referee and co-host of Aftermath):
Saddened to hear about the passing of Tom Billington/Dynamite Kid. An innovator way ahead of his time. An inspiration to so many even to this day. Rest peacefully.
Jeff Jarrett (WWE Hall of Famer):
Thoughts and prayers to all the family and friends of Tom “Dynamite Kid” Billington ... a true in-ring pioneer in the professional wrestling industry... RIP..
