OVO Raptors vs Utah Jazz

Who else felt like they were playing Mario Kart with all of these chevrons on the hardwood tonight?  Although when run over, no one was picking up speed or yelling “yahoo”.  The Raptors debuted their OVO jerseys tonight along with their black & gold court, to promote their ‘Welcome Toronto’ program- the first of six games played at the ACC.

The game started out slow for both teams. While the Jazz were looking to win two in a row, the Raptors were looking to get their coaching staff to LA to coach the Eastern Conference All-Stars if they could pull through with a win. The Rap’s headed into last night’s game winning eight out of the last nine games with the Jazz, so odds were in their favor.

Mitchell puts up the first four points of the game starting a 4-0 run for the Jazz. Shortly after, Jonas Valanciunas sunk a three - which wasn’t his only three of the game – finally giving the crowd something to cheer for.  Although Valancunias’ long range was impressive, Casey had to call a time out with 2:47 remaining, while Raps were down 22-14 after Joe Inlges made back-to-back buckets. DeRozan makes a quick 5pts in the final minute of the 1st - maintaining the lead, 30-24.

The second quarter started off as slow as the first with Pascal Siakam scoring the first bucket for the Raps 2:15 minutes into the third. There were no starters on the floor for the Raptors as Casey was trying to match up with Utah. Just as I was thinking “Where has my Rookie Of The Year been?” BAM! There he is. Mitchell is fifth all time in most points in franchise history for the Utah Jazz passing Andre Kirilenko, and he has only played 47 games. Mitchell ended the night with 26pts.

*ICYMI- OG Anunoby had a monster put back from a DeRozan miss putting the Raptors in charge, 47-45 just before the half. In my opinion, OG is one rookie that should have made the rising stars challenge. He is special.

JV started the third quarter with that second three pointer that I had mentioned..is it too late to add another competitor to the 3-pt competition? Jonas finished with a heck of a night with 28pts, 14reb, 2ast, a steal and 4 blks! He had Matt Devlin yelling “Welcome to Lithuania” so much, I had dreams about Lithuania last night. Donovan Mitchell then responds with a three of his own, making it clear he’s not to be forgotten. The Jazz in the lead ending the quarter 75-69.

With ten seconds left to play in the game, Donovan Mitchell brings the ball up the court and passes left to a wide open Ricky Rubio, a 29% 3pt shooter, and drains the three to put the Jazz up 93-95. Now, its up to who? Demar… DeRozan to tie up the game but sadly the fade away jumper doesn’t go…and a frustrated DeRozan takes it out on his brand new jersey by ripping it.

The Raptors will keep thier black & gold jerseys (Demar will need a new one) for tomorrow's game against Magic Johnson's youth, the Los Angeles Lakers @ 6:00pm
