ONE Championship Sign Big TV Deal with Turner
Friday, December 14, 2018
ONE Championship has created a lot of buzz for their promotion is the last few months. They signed notable fighters like former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Sage Northcutt, whose one of the sports’ most entertaining young fighters, and made the first trade in MMA when they sent former welterweight champion Ben Askren to the UFC for former flyweight champion and arguably one of the greatest fighters of all-time Demetrious Johnson.
The promotion made yet another big move this week as it was reported that ONE Championship signed a TV rights deal with Turner to air their events on the media giant’s various platforms.
The deal is for 3-years and will see ONE Championship air 24-events on the streaming service B/R Live and there will also be a condensed 1-hour version of events airing on TNT, which has become synonymous with the NBA.
This is a significant step for MMA because it shows that streaming services could take over the PPV industry in the near future. This has been a trend in MMA in the last 12-months; the UFC has signed a deal that will see many of their events air on ESPN+, Bellator signed a deal with DAZN, and now ONE Championship signed a deal with Turner, that’ll see their fights air on B/R Live.
With the amount of exposure Turner’s platforms can offer to ONE Championship, this could be the best thing for the sport of MMA to have three big promotions competing with one another for the reputation of having the best product and fighters.
The UFC is still the number-one promotion, but Bellator and ONE’s recent deals have shown that the gap is getting smaller, and now gives the fighters more opportunities to explore offers from each promotion to get the best possible deal for themselves and high-profile fights, which is very exciting for fans.
